Celtic will play KR Reykjavik in the first round of UEFA Champions League qualifying after a Sunday morning draw in Nyon, Switzerland.

As we discussed last night, Neil Lennon’s team were placed into a whittled down group of seeded and non-seeded teams with three scenarios possible from today’s draw.

Djurgardens of Sweden, KR Reykjavik of Iceland and the winner of a tie played between Linfield and Kosovo’s Drita were all potential opponents.

We now know that the first test will come from Reykjavik, who will visit Celtic Park for the encounter.

Celtic have played the Icelandic champions before in qualifying, winning 5-0 on aggregate back in 2014.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the normal two-legged qualifying ties of seasons past have been replaced by one-off games until the play-off round.

The match against Reykjavik will take place on 18 or 19 August, with extra time and a penalty shoot-out if required.

Winners advance to the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round, the draw for which is tomorrow morning.

All losing sides progress to the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.

As we’d expect at this stage of the competition Celtic will be heavy favourites to make it through and our home advantage only adds to that.

Fans are certainly confident after the draw, taking to Twitter to share their thoughts this morning…

In other news, 67 Hail Hail’s David Walton thinks Neil Lennon should turn to a former player to help solve Celtic’s depth issues in defence.
