If Celtic fail to overcome FC Midtjylland in Champions League qualifying, the Bhoys drop into the third qualifying round of the Europa League, where they will face FK Jablonec of the Czech Republic.

The draw for the competition has just taken place from UEFA HQ.

Celtic now know who they will face in the Champions League or Europa League, win or lose against the Danes.

As we discussed earlier, PSV or Galatasaray await in the next round of the big competition should Ange Postecoglou’s Bhoys triumph.

However, given the confidence in securing a result against Midtjylland is low amongst some sections of the support, today’s Europa League draw is of particular interest.

Securing European group stage football in some form this season is crucial for the club whether it be in the Champions League, Europa League or, yes, even the Europa Conference League.

If Celtic beat Midtjylland, that European status is confirmed. The losers in the UCL third qualifying round parachute straight into the group stages of the Europa League.

That’s another reason tomorrow’s game at Celtic Park carries so much importance. It could literally set Celtic’s European schedule for the season early on, allowing the club to plan ahead on sounder footing.

The squad isn’t in great shape but Midtjylland are not unbeatable and have problems of their own.

I’m expecting it to be a close encounter however it shakes out.

If we do lose, the Europa League matches against Jablonec will be played on 5th and 12th August.

In other news, Celtic defensive shortages for UCL qualifier is a real letdown for supporters.
