Former Celtic midfielder Mark Fotheringham has been confirmed as one of Felix Magath’s assistant coaches at Hertha Berlin.

Fotheringham had recently made the news in Scotland as one of the potential candidates to link up with Neil Lennon in Cyprus as an assistant at Omonia Nicosia. In the end, those talks fell through [Scottish Sun].

And it appears as though Fotheringham has picked up a much more high-profile gig in the Bundesliga. Magath today confirmed the news at his first presser as Hertha coach after being confirmed today:

Magath worked with Fotheringham back in 2014 when he signed him for Fulham. And despite an ill-fated spell in charge of the London club, it appears as though the pair’s relationship remains a strong one. The 2-time Bundesliga-winning manager has certainly invested his trust in Fotheringham, and it’ll be interesting to see how both men do.

The German tactician is contracted to the club until the end of the season. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether this is just a short-term gig for former Celt Fotheringham.

Mark will also link up with former Celtic centre-back Dedryck Boyata, who currently captains the Berlin-based club.

Mark Fotheringham bags a big role as he looks to build upon his reputation

This is certainly the step-up for Mark compared to where he was last season. 12 months ago he was operating with Ingolstadt and helped them secure promotion to the Bundesliga 2 league.

Now, his main focus will be on ensuring that Hertha manage to remain in the top flight. As things stand, Fotheringham’s new club sits in the relegation spots. Berlin are, however, only 2 points away from safety with another 8 games remaining.

Those will undoubtedly whittle down quickly. But even so, they have plenty of time to guide their new club to safety. And Fotheringham no doubt would love to extend his own coaching career in German football’s top flight.

The move comes after the ex-Hoops academy graduate had his sights set on returning to Scotland. He was a contender to take over at Dunfermline Athletic back in November before John Hughes took the gig [Scottish Sun].

Fingers crossed Fotheringham flourishes in his new role as he continues to make a positive name for himself as a coach. Even if it is as a number 2, working in the Bundesliga simply couldn’t be sniffed at.
