‘They find it’ – Auston Trusty on what his American friends say about Celtic and Rangers

There are not many games in world football that can match Celtic vs Rangers.

Even if Scottish football as a whole isn’t one of the most-watched, recognisable or cash-rich leagues in Europe, one thing certainly is, and that’s the famous and hotly contested Glasgow derby.

Celtic have been dominating proceedings for a long time now, including winning 13 out of the last 14 Premiership titles.

Auston Trusty was signed by Celtic last summer, and he got to experience the rivalry with Rangers first-hand. And it’s fair to say that he loved every minute of it.

Auston Trusty on what his American friends think of Celtic vs Rangers

Coming from America, where football, or soccer as they call it, isn’t the most-watched sport, and their understanding of it isn’t the best.

Trusty, speaking to Men in Blazers, stated that when he explains the Celtic vs Rangers rivalry to his American friends, ‘who aren’t soccer or football people’, they find it all ‘cool’ and ‘interesting.’

The USMNT international added that games such as this are ones ‘you want to play’, and how he is ‘loving every bit of it.’

Host and former USMNT international Herculez Gomez: “So, you go from Colorado, the beautiful scenery of Colorado, to the, I have to assume, the hectic lifestyle of now being a Celtic player.

“It has to be pretty crazy when you pick up the local paper, turn on the TV, and your face is everywhere. They are talking about the team 24/7. I am sure that didn’t happen when you were in Colorado.

“You are the main attraction now, and when we talk about a main attraction, there is usually a big rival. It’s one of the best rivalries in the world. We are talking Celtic vs Rangers. You have experienced it. You already said that Messi has talked about playing at Celtic Park. What has this rivalry been like, and how have you experienced it?”

Trusty responded: “When I explain this to my friends back home, who aren’t soccer people or football people, they don’t really understand the severity of what it is, and what it represents.

“They find it really cool and interesting how I explain it to them. You want to play in games like that. You want to be in environments like that. That’s what the sport is about. That’s what football is about. I am loving every bit of it.”

Trusty on experiencing his first Celtic vs Rangers game

After Trusty signed from Sheffield United last summer, the first matchday squad so happened to be the 3-0 win over Rangers in August.

The 26-year-old didn’t come off the bench, but it didn’t stop him from getting to see and feel what the game is all about.

That’s before, during and after the game, with Celtic dispatching their rivals on their way to title number 55.

“My first game, when I arrived at Celtic, the team was playing Rangers the next day, so I was on the bench,” added Trusty.

“I got to really experience it, and it was just crazy. From the fans out front to all the hype before the game. To the game, and how it is. We crushed them that game.”
