Daizen Maeda’s fitness is rarely in question.

Brendan Rodgers’ trust in the Hoops forward is clear – he starts a vast majority of games and is rarely used from the bench.

Even in the Hoops’ 3-2 win over Motherwell, Maeda was given the full 90 minutes, spending time in every position in Rodgers’ front three.

He is currently on international duty with Japan. The last time this was the case, Maeda revealed his desire to leave Celtic in the recent transfer window.

It may not be quite the bombshell revelation this time, but a story has nevertheless emerged around the Celtic man again on this occasion.

Daizen Maeda to miss Japan match

The Samurai Blue have already confirmed their place in next summer’s World Cup, so they have undergone a programme of preparation games against opposition from Latin America.

Maeda is likely to be involved in the tournament next year, fitness allowing. Reo Hatate’s place is in more doubt – he hasn’t been included in their last two squads.

A more immediate concern for Maeda is his involvement in Japan’s match against Paraguay on Friday – local media has confirmed that he will miss out on the encounter.

A report from gekisaka says: “Forward Daizen Maeda (Celtic) refrained from training due to tightness in his left foot.

“They arrived in Osaka on the afternoon of the 9th and conducted final training sessions ahead of the Paraguay match. During the 15 minutes open to the press, Maeda was engrossed in conversation with manager Hajime Moriyasu.

“It’s certain that Kubo and Maeda will miss the Paraguay match. The available players will likely be limited to 24.

“With the crucial match of this series against Brazil (at Ajinomoto Stadium) coming up on the 14th, a roster plan for both matches is likely to be adopted.”

Daizen Maeda’s importance to Celtic

Maeda’s form has been in question since the beginning of the season, but his late winner against Motherwell shows exactly why Rodgers keeps him in the team.

There is uncertainty over Michel-Ange Balikwisha’s best position, whilst Sebastian Tounekti appears to be Rodgers’ first-choice left-winger.

Given his contribution to all three positions in the Hoops’ frontline, Rodgers will be praying that this fitness issue is only precautionary.

The Hoops’ next league match is against Dundee at Dens Park next Sunday, after which they return to Europa League action with a crucial home fixture against Sturm Graz.
