Darren O’Dea named interim manager of Championship club after leaving Celtic in the summer

Celtic’s management team has seen plenty of change this season.

Brendan Rodgers’ sudden resignation was enough of a shock, but a number of his backroom coaches left with him.

The most notable of them was John Kennedy, who ended a 27-year association with Celtic, during which he won 22 trophies.

Martin O’Neill replaced Rodgers on an interim basis, building a coaching staff of Shaun Maloney, Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus.

But another coach who left Celtic at the beginning of the season will now get the chance to lead a Championship club at the weekend.

Ex-Celtic coach Darren O’Dea named interim manager at Championship club

Darren O’Dea had worked with McManus in charge of the Hoops’ B team before becoming Player Pathways Manager.

He left Celtic Park this summer to join countryman Alan Sheehan as assistant manager at Swansea.

Sheehan was sacked at the beginning of the international break, and the Swans entered talks with highly-rated Swedish boss Kim Hellberg.

But in a dramatic twist, Hellberg had his head turned at the eleventh hour and left Swansea in the lurch to instead take the Middlesbrough job.

This left the Welsh club back at square one, and despite some of their fans thinking that O’Dea had left alongside Sheehan, he has now been named their interim boss.

As it stands, the ex-Hoops defender will be in the dugout for their fixture against Bristol City on Saturday.

He might not be in the position for long though, with Swansea reportedly pursuing Maritimo boss Vitor Matos, who previously worked with Liverpool.

They currently sit in 18th place in the Championship, eight points away from the play-off spots.

How has Adam Idah done since leaving Celtic for Swansea?

Eyebrows were certainly raised in Glasgow when Swansea signed Adam Idah from Celtic for £7 million in the summer.

He has since scored twice for his new club. This isn’t all down to bad form, it must be said – fellow Swansea striker Zan Vipotnik, previously linked with Celtic, has been on fire in front of goal recently, keeping Idah on the bench.

The man who won the Scottish Cup for the Celts in 2024 started in Swansea’s 3-2 win over Ange Postecoglou’s Nottingham Forest, as well as the following round against Manchester City.

A new Irish striker has taken the mantle for the Hoops, in the shape of Johnny Kenny. He and Idah were both on the pitch when Troy Parrott sealed a famous win for the Irish in Budapest on Saturday.
