Celtic have had a number of managers over the years that have delivered not just success but a superb brand of football that blew the Hoops support away.

Tommy Burns had Celtic playing some superb football during his tenure and ended a six-year trophy drought at the club.

Martin O’Neill came in in the early 2000s and won Celtic’s first treble since the Jock Steing era and made the Parkhead club feared in Europe again.

Gordon Strachan, Neil Lennon and Brendan Rodgers also all brought their own brand of football that also brought incredible success at Celtic.

However, for Livingston boss David Martindale, there was one former Celtic boss who really looked up to during his time at the Parkhead club.

Martindale’s ‘love’ of Ange Postecoglou’s success at Celtic

Ange Postecolgou arrived as Celtic as a relatively unknown quantity. Two seasons later and five trophies out of seven including a record-breaking treble, the Australian left the club a legend and with Martindale as one of his fans.

When asked of the managers he looked up to, Martindale told The Scottish Sun’s One on One, “I think there’s a lot. Everybody is going to hit you with the Pep comment but see for me, I love watching their [Man City] team.

“Ange I think, did an incredible job at Celtic and then went down to the Premier League and I sit and watch that and I love watching that.”

Martindale also listed Steven Gerrard, Derek McInnes and Tony Docherty as managers he also respected during his time in the Scottish Premiership.

What David Martindale has previously said about Celtic and Ange Postecoglou

This isn’t the first time that Martindale has praised Celtic and Ange. During his time in the Scottish Premiership, the Livingston boss faced Postecoglou six times, losing four, drawing one and winning just once.

In March 2020, Martindale praised Celtic as a ‘top, top team’ and said Postecoglou was a ‘terrific manager’ after the Bhoys beat his side 3-1.

After Celtic demolished Dundee United 9-0 in 2022, Martindale praised Postecoglou for transforming the way the Hoops play as they blew all the opposition away that season.

So it seems that the Livingston boss is a massive fan of Postecoglou and even though he has been gone from Celtic for over a year, Martindale is still in awe of the football he watched in two seasons of Parkhead domestic dominance.
