Davie Provan calls on Dermot Desmond to open his wallet & deliver big at Celtic; doubts Eddie Howe

Former Celtic player Davie Provan reckons Dermot Desmond holds the key to appointing a new big-name manager at Celtic Park.

Desmond is largely credited with being behind the push to bring Brendan Rodgers to the club after he was sacked by Liverpool.

It was an ambitious appointment at the time, especially after a couple of years being led by the relatively unknown Ronny Deila.

With Celtic likely to be on the search for a new manager this year – if not now, surely at the end of the season – then similar ambition is needed.

That’s what fans are craving after our potential ten-in-a-row season was blown to pieces.

Sky Sports man Provan reckons it’ll be expensive to bring in the right calibre of coach.

Writing in his Scottish Sun column today, he stated: “That directors haven’t already paid up Lennon’s contract suggests they’re struggling to get a proper replacement. Fortunate to get someone of Brendan Rodgers’ calibre after Ronny Deila, there is no obvious candidate.

“Eddie Howe? I can’t see the Celtic support buying into the former Bournemouth boss.

“Celtic’s immediate future rests with Dermot Desmond. Top coaches cost top dollar and that’s what it will take to get the right man.

“In the meantime, they should spare Lennon’s dignity by paying him up and removing him from the firing line. Otherwise, it’s going to get ugly.”

Dermot Desmond Celtic plans unclear

The truth is that speculating about the future of Celtic is pretty much pointless at the moment. I know I am undercutting the point of a Celtic blog with that comment but… it’s true.

We have no idea what the club are currently thinking. They’ve turtled up into a shell of silence. Even the snippets being leaked to journalists and media have dried up.

There’s a belief that some sort of restructuring could take place this summer – but what form will that take? Will there be a domineering director of football with a tactics-based coach? A manager who can straddle both roles? Or simply a project of John Kennedy taking charge after years in the backroom staff?

I’d prefer the club over-invest in a quality manager and coaching staff than players. That’s the route to improvement over the next three to five years.

We can hope that figures such a Desmond have the ambition to pay what’s needed to deliver true leaders at the club. But that’s all it is – hope.
