Dundee sack Tony Docherty as Celtic hero emerges as candidate for Dens Park job

Tony Docherty has been dismissed by Dundee this morning and it appears that a former Celtic star is up for the Dens Park job.

Docherty secured Dundee’s status in the Scottish Premiership after just two wins in their last five games meant that the Dens Park club now do not need to go through the play-offs at the end of the season.

With Dundee losing their captain Luke McCowan to Celtic on transfer deadline day, Docherty started the season hamstrung even before a ball was kicked.

With McCowan preparing to attempt to win a treble with Celtic this week, it appears that a former Parkhead player could be in the running for the top job with the Taysiders.

Celtic hero Shaun Maloney is ‘in the frame’ for the Dundee manager job

Shaun Maloney has emerged as a candidate for the Dundee job just hours after Tony Docherty’s Dens Park departure.

The former Celtic attacker is currently out of work after leaving Wigan earlier in the season and according to The Scottish Sun, Maloney is ‘in the frame’ for the job.

Maloney had a brief spell at Hibs where the ex-Celtic man struggled to make an impact at Easter Road and after being hired in December 2021, he was let go five months later after a run of just one win in 13 games.

Ironically, Maloney was linked to the Dundee job in 2022 after the BBC reported that Gordon Strachan pursued the player who helped him win two Scottish Premiership titles and two Scottish Cups during his term as the Celtic manager.

Tony Docherty’s record as Dundee boss vs Celtic

Tony Docherty was a likeable manager and respected by much of the Celtic support. Even in defeat, the former Dundee boss was always gracious towards the Parkhead club.

Docherty came close to ending Dundee’s 37-year winless run against the Bhoys this season with a 3-3 draw at Dens Park.

And if Maloney is successful in getting the position, the former Celtic man will have a job on his hands to turn around one of the worst defensive records in the Scottish Premiership.
