Dundee United manager’s tactics could play into Celtic’s hands

Dundee United manager Mickey Mellon has vowed that his team will ‘give it a go; when they face Celtic at Tannadice on Saturday, the Daily Record reports.

“We will be trying to find a way to make it difficult for Celtic, and we have to make sure that we do things right to give ourselves a bigger chance. But we’ll have no fear and give it a go” Mellon said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

Should Mellon stick to his word and have a go at the Hoops – play on the front foot, and attack Celtic – then it could play into the hands of the Scottish Champions.

Hoops will be more comfortable given space

Celtic will be much more comfortable playing a side who will give Neil Lennon’s side space and the opportunity to hit them on the break. That could easily happen if Dundee United overcommit going forward.

Let’s look at Celtic’s last league game, the 1-1 draw against Kilmarnock a few weeks ago. As soon as Kilmarnock equalised, they stuck nine men behind the ball and asked the Hoops to break them down.

For a variety of reasons, Neil Lennon’s side were unable to do that. It sounds as if Dundee United will be playing in the exact opposite style to Kilmarnock. That could suit Celtic’s attacking players.

If you look at Celtic’s three competitive games so far this season, the Hoops have scored 12 goals. That is an average of four goals a game.

Not afraid to pile on the goals

That indicates that this season Neil Lennon’s side won’t be afraid to pile on the goals when the opportunity presents itself.

The likes of Mohamed Elyounoussi and Odsonne Edouard could potentially have a field day if Dundee United are constantly pushing forward.

Only time will tell on that front. However, it could turn out to be a very entertaining game if Mellon sticks to his guns and goes on the attack.

In other news, Scott Robertson has not ruled out a loan move away from Celtic.
