Dutch media outlet NOS Sport has elaborated slightly more on Mitchel Bakker’s comments about leaving PSG.
Journalist Thierry Boon published a tweet yesterday that said that the left-back told him he was “I’m going for a chance in Paris”. However, it doesn’t seem as definitive as that.
Celtic have already reportedly seen a loan bid for the player rejected, with PSG still open to sending the player out (Sky Sports).

And in a detailed article covering Bakker’s thoughts on being with the Dutch under-21s, he touched on the Celtic link. Speaking to NOC Sport the player made the following remark:
“I have not heard anything about Celtic (wanting him on loan). I want to stay with PSG and get even more game-time.”
A door that hasn’t even opened yet can’t be closed
This puts a slightly different perspective on the matter. The fact that Bakker hasn’t even heard anything from Parkhead shows that he hasn’t had the chance to be tempted just yet.
What player in world football is ever going to say anything other than he wants to get more game-time with his current club? He’s hardly closed the door on Celtic here, and looks like he could be persuaded that it would be the best thing for him.
For example, if PSG boss Thomas Tuchel tells him that he likely won’t be used much this season, surely he’ll be happy to take a look at any potential offer from Celtic then? Senior game-time is more important than rubbing shoulders with the PSG stars.

The fact that Bakker hasn’t heard anything from Parkhead means he has to make these noises about staying with PSG. If/when an official offer comes his way that his club deems acceptable, there’s no guarantee that wouldn’t change his mind-set.
He hasn’t stated that he’s definitely staying in France this season. Only that it would be his preferred option. And of course it would – who wouldn’t want to play regularly at the club they’re currently signed to?
It’ll now be interesting to see how any potential offer from Celtic sways Bakker’s thinking. If these comments are anything to go by, however, nothing is certain just yet.
In other news, these English fans are perplexed by the idea that Celtic may sign their star man.
