What can you say about former Celtic defender, Efe Ambrose? A transfer deadline day capture by Neil Lennon in 2012, the Nigerian international enjoyed a trophy-laden five years at the club.

The 34-year-old made 169 appearances for Celtic picking up four league titles, a Scottish Cup and a League Cup. He also won the African Cup of Nations with Nigeria during his first season at Celtic.

Ambrose was a player who split the opinion of the Celtic fans. He clearly had ability but sometimes his inconsistency and decision-making could lead to mistakes at the back and cause some heart-in-mouth moments for the Celtic fans.

However, despite that, you don’t pick up the medals he has without being a very good player. And now, after leaving Greenock Morton (his eighth club in his career) at the end of last season, Ambrose is looking to continue his 17-year-long career by going on trial at Scottish League One side, Cove Rangers.

The Nigerian went on trial this week with Cove as they faced Dundee in a 1-0 loss in a pre-season friendly. Ambrose was one of five trialists that Paul Hartley was running the rule over as he looked to bolster his squad for the new season ahead.

After Celtic, Ambrose has enjoyed spells at Hibernian, Derby County, Livingston, St Johnstone, and Dunfermline. His experience could be the one major factor that convinces Hartley to take a chance on him but, as yet, no decision has been made on his future.

It would be good to see the former Celtic man be given the chance to continue his career in Scotland because no matter what you think of Ambrose, he was still a popular character and a cult figure in his time at Parkhead.
