Giorgos Giakoumakis has thanked Celtic fans for all the support they’ve shown him after his return to goalscoring form at Hampden yesterday.
The Greek striker came into the match against Kilmarnock as a second-half substitute and scored a late stoppage-time goal to make the result comfortable at 2-0. It was his first goal for the club since October 25th and his ninth this season overall.
In a message on Instagram this evening, Giakoumakis said: “Enjoy every moment like it’s your last! On to the final.! Thank you for the immense support🤍💚”
No doubt many people will be reading all sorts into this statement. At face value, it does seem at least a little playful and referencing all the transfer interest him recently.
But is it a nod to a goodbye? That’s not something we can determine yet with Ange Postecoglou insistent this weekend that no bids have crossed his table that a decision needs to be made on.
In the meantime, the Celtic manager has made it clear he is entirely comfortable with Giakoumakis’ contribution in training and matches, meaning he will be involved right up to the point any deal is in place.
Let’s be honest, given the unpredictable nature of football, it’s impossible to rule out a Giakoumakis stay beyond this month too.
Giakoumakis has been an entertaining performer for the Bhoys since arriving from Dutch side VVV-Venlo in the summer of 2021.
After initial fitness and injury problems, he became a key component of last season’s title win, earning praise for his physical, poaching style.
His penchant for late goals hasn’t hurt his reputation and if he does go, there’ll be plenty of supporters saying goodbye to a favourite.
As it stands, let’s enjoy and support him. He clearly relishes it!
