Everything is about Celtic for Kris Boyd as he desperately tries to compare Brendan Rodgers and Russell Martin

Kris Boyd has already said plenty about Rangers appointing their new manager.

Russell Martin was the man Rangers chose to replace Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson on a three-year deal at Ibrox.

Boyd was asked live on Sky Sports News yesterday if he thinks Martin can push Brendan Rodgers and Celtic in a Scottish Premiership title race next year.

He replied that the squad would need some major upheaval for that to happen, but stated it isn’t impossible and he’s seen bigger points gaps closed down within a season.

Now, Boyd has written his latest column for The Scottish Sun and is doing everything to compare Martin’s arrival with Rodgers’ to the Hoops in 2016.

Boyd makes ridiculous Rodgers and Martin parallels

Boyd points out that Rodgers had not won a single trophy before being chosen as Celtic manager in 2016, similar to Martin now.

So the pundit has argued why can’t Martin go on a similar journey to Rodgers, which is quite frankly ridiculous.

Boyd wrote: “When Brendan Rodgers was named Celtic boss, the only thing he had won was a play-off final. That’s precisely what Russell Martin arrives at Rangers with now.

“OK, Rodgers had previously bossed Liverpool and came close to winning the Premier League title. But he didn’t, did he?

“No, Rodgers came to Celtic and Scottish football with the task of rebuilding his managerial reputation — something he’s done in style.

“Who’s to say Martin can’t now do exactly the same? It’s not going to be easy. I’m not saying that for one single minute. But keep me out of all of this negativity that surrounds his appointment.

“The Rodgers we see now at Celtic is a winner. After his first spell at the club, he returned to England with Leicester City and lifted trophies, and he’s back up here doing more of the same.

“But he had to start lifting trophies somewhere.”

Martin is nowhere near Rodgers

Yes, Boyd is correct when making it clear that neither Rodgers nor Martin had won a trophy before being appointed Celtic and Rangers managers for the first time.

But to suggest Martin can deliver anything remotely close to what Rodgers has done at the Hoops is beyond silly.

The Celtic manager across two spells so far has won 11 major trophies in Scotland, making him the third-most decorated Celtic boss of all time.

That shows how immensely successful the Northern Irishman has been, more so than the likes of Martin O’Neill, Neil Lennon, Gordon Strachan and Billy McNeill.

Moreover, Rodgers had been in a close-run Premier League title battle before joining Celtic, and had managed one of the biggest clubs in the world in Liverpool.

You cannot compare that with Martin’s prior experience, which consists of managing MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton.
