Joe Lewis shut down Kris Boyd’s suggestion that Aberdeen seemingly try harder against Rangers than Celtic.
Before the international break, Celtic thumped Aberdeen 6-0, with Kris Boyd claiming after the game that he is no doubt that Barry Robson’s side will now turn up when they face Rangers.
Those comments were highlighted once again on Sky Sports today, with Joe Lewis making it clear that ‘absolutely isn’t’ the case and that it’s ‘much easier’ to play against Rangers than Celtic.
The ex-Dons keeper added that the reason behind Aberdeen fairing better against Rangers than Celtic is because the latter is a ‘far better team’, as he told Sky Sports Football (26/11/23 at 11:05 am).
It needs to be noted that Celtic and Aberdeen had come off playing in Europe when they met before the international break, with the latter travelling back from their Thursday night trip to Greece.
Either way, this is what Joe Lewis had to say about Kris Boyd’s comments when they were brought up again on Sunday morning.
Aberdeen against Celtic and Rangers
“Absolutely not,” said Lewis about Boyd’s comments. “I think you are probably comparing the results they get against Celtic compared to what they get against Rangers.
“They are two completely different teams. Celtic in the last number of years have been a far better team. It has been much easier to play against Rangers. They give you more opportunities. And they are a weaker side. That’s probably why you get the better results against them.
Joe Lewis then tells Kris Boyd: “There is a better atmosphere here for Rangers games than above all else, which maybe helps the team. I have heard Rangers players and managers last season commenting on the atmosphere here, whether that affects them, it shouldn’t do. They play at Ibrox every week, which is a loud stadium.
“I think Rangers need to look at their own performances against Aberdeen rather than Aberdeen against whoever else.”
Look in the mirror
Even if Aberdeen put more of an effort in against Rangers. So what? Deal with it and get the three points, or in Kris Boyd’s case, cry about it on the TV.
Facts are facts. Rangers just haven’t been good enough for years and years now, that’s why they only have two trophies in their bag.
That’s also why they have gone through many managers, whilst Celtic continue to dominate Glasgow and Scotland.
