Former Celtic midfielder Paul Hartley has lost his job as manager of Hartlepool United after just three months in charge [Hartlepool United].

The 45-year-old took up the role at the English League Two side in June, choosing to depart Cove Rangers despite their promotion to the Scottish Championship.

During the summer, Hartley made a number of interesting signings, bringing a Scottish/SPFL-linked contingency of players to the club, which included former Celtic academy youngster Brody Paterson.

However, things haven’t worked out for the ex-Scottish Premiership winner during his first managerial role south of the border.

Hartlepool made an extremely disappointing start to the 2022/23 campaign, going on a nine-game winless run in the league, ultimately leading to Hartley’s sacking on Sunday evening.

Currently, the club sit second bottom of League Two on four points, and the writing was on the wall for Hartley, with tensions rising between the former Scotland internationalist and those behind the scenes at Hartlepool [Northern Echo].

The majority of Hartley’s career has been spent in Scotland, with his most successful period as a player being spent at Parkhead during a two-year stay towards the end of his playing days.

During that time, the midfielder formed a formidable partnership alongside Barry Robson and picked up four trophies in that time.

Following the end of his playing days, Hartley quickly moved into management at Alloa Athletic and has also enjoyed some successful periods at Dundee and Cove.

But, the ex-Celtic man has suffered some disappointment as a manager, with his latest spell down south lasting just a matter of months.

As a coach, there are likely to be plenty of clubs within the Lower Leagues in Scotland who will still rate Hartley very highly, having shown his ability to earn promotion at several sides.

So, hopefully, we are able to see another former Hoops players get back into management quickly after a disappointing few months, which led to his sacking last weekend.
