Ex-Celtic striker shares what he noticed about Kelechi Iheanacho at Middlesbrough last season

Celtic ended the transfer window in truly embarrassing fashion.

Despite having well over £60m sitting in the bank, plus the £16.5m accrued for the sale of Nicolas Kuhn, Celtic spent just £5.2m on deadline day.

A quality striker and a winger was needed, and while Sebastian Tounekti arrived very late on, Adam Idah was not replaced before 11pm on Monday.

As such, Kelechi Iheanacho was secured on a one-year deal as a free agent following his release from Sevilla.

Former Nigeria boss Finidi George has backed Iheanacho to shine at Celtic, but Andy Walker is remaining cautious.

Andy Walker says Iheanacho ‘wasn’t sharp’ for Middlesbrough last season

Iheanacho played for Middlesbrough on loan from Sevilla for a period last season, but he only scored one goal in 15 games for the EFL Championship outfit.

Ex-Celtic striker Walker watched the Nigerian a couple of times for Boro, and The Go Radio Football Show pundit has shared what he noticed.

Walker said: “I saw Iheanacho a couple of times last season at Middlesbrough. He just wasn’t sharp. I mean, we all recognise the tremendous talent he was at Leicester years ago when he was on fire.

“But he has struggled the last couple of seasons. If he is on top form, if he is fit as a fiddle and sharp, I think he’ll be an asset. But it’s a big ask at the moment.”

How well did Iheanacho do for Leicester City?

Walker touches on Iheanacho’s spell at Leicester City, the club he played for while Brendan Rodgers was the manager.

It was the best period of his career at the King Power Stadium, with the striker netting 61 goals in 232 games between 2017 and 2024.

Across the 2020/21 campaign, Iheanacho was on fire as he fired in 19 goals in 39 appearances. Those strikes helped the Foxes to an impressive 5th in the Premier League.

Rodgers was clearly key in getting the best out of Iheanacho, so Celtic fans can only hope the Northern Irishman can conjure up similar magic this time around.
