Celtic and Oasis have something in common on Friday night.

They are both kicking off their respective touring journeys as Oasis commence their reunion gigs in Cardiff, while Celtic play Queen’s Park in a friendly clash before a trip around Europe.

Celtic and Oasis share a strong relationship that stems from brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher’s shared love for the Glasgow club.

Clearly, Celtic are their second team after their beloved Manchester City, who they have both supported through thick and thin since the 1970s.

So ahead of Oasis getting back together tonight, 67 Hail Hail take a look at Celtic’s history with the Gallagher brothers over the years.

Gallagher brothers’ Ireland connection

We can trace roots back to the 1960s when Liam and Noel’s parents Tommy and Peggy moved from Charlestown in County Mayo, Ireland to Manchester, England in search of better prospects in life.

Of course, Celtic and Ireland are steeped in history together, so there’s no wonder why the Gallagher brothers leaned more towards Celtic after their beloved Manchester City.

There are actually two Celtic supporters’ clubs in County Mayo where Liam and Noel’s parents hail from, Achill Island CSC and Westport CSC.

Moreover, in 2024, Celtic legend John Hartson spoke at a Q&A event in Castlebar, County Mayo. It proves there is a strong Celtic support in the area.

Noel’s experience of Celtic 6-2 Rangers in 2000

Fast forward nearly 40 years and the Gallagher brothers are worldwide famous thanks to their success in the band Oasis. In 2000, Noel attends the ‘Demolition Derby’.

Celtic thumped Rangers 6-2 at Parkhead in what was Martin O’Neill’s first Old Firm derby in charge of the Hoops.

Noel was sat in the directors’ box at Celtic Park to witness the incredible clash and remembers being blown away before the game even started!

The Oasis hit ‘Roll With It’ was blasting out of the PA system before the music was stopped halfway into the song and the Celtic fans sang the rest themselves.

Noel said of that moment and the game itself, as quoted in Richard Purden’s book ‘We Are Celtic Supporters’: “The greatest thing I’ve ever seen was before the 6-2 match.

“I was having a drink and this guy came up and said: ‘You better go and sit in your seat, son, something special is about to happen.’ As I walked into the stadium, ‘Roll With It’ came out of the PA. They stopped it halfway and the fans stood up and began to sing it.

“I’m glad I got the chance to see Henrik Larsson score against Rangers when he looked especially cool with the dreadlocks. He scored with a magnificent chip over the keeper’s head. Everyone thought the ball was over, even the ball boys, but he was already celebrating.

“My other favourite Celtic player was Kenny Dalglish. He was just a phenomenal footballer. He had the haircut, the big sideboards, the big collared shirts and the number on the shorts. I also liked Charlie Nicholas. Anyone that comes with the prefix ‘Champagne’ is all right by me.”

Liam dedicates song to ex-Celtic midfielder Roy Keane

In December 2005, it was announced that Roy Keane would sign for Celtic in the upcoming January transfer window having left Manchester United.

Oasis played at the SECC in Glasgow on the 14th and 15th, with lead vocalist Liam dedicating a song to the Irish midfielder with his Hoops future sealed.

As per Glasgow World, Liam’s dedication to Keane was met with a chorus of boos inside the arena.

Liam kisses Celtic badge & Noel sings Hoops song

Long after Oasis split up in August 2009, Liam and Noel Gallagher continued to show their affection for Celtic.

Noel was invited to Celtic Park in September 2016 for the Bhoys’ Champions League group stage clash against his beloved Man City.

In 2018, Liam was pictured kissing the Celtic badge on a jersey worn by a supporter in a toilet in Perth, Australia.

A year previously, Noel attended a U2 gig and was clearly a few drinks into his night. A Celtic fan approached him for a video selfie and Noel began signing ‘Hail, Hail, the Celts are here!’

‘Roll With It’ becomes Celtic anthem

You know Celtic have just won a cup final or a Glasgow derby when the PA system blasts out Oasis anthem ‘Roll With It’ at full-time.

It’s become a staple at Parkhead and Hampden after huge Celtic victories, such as the derby triumph over Rangers in February 2022.

As soon as the full-time whistle sounded, the song started and 60,000 Celtic fans erupted into song as they celebrated the win in style.

It was also heard after the 2024 Scottish Cup final win over Rangers at Hampden, with the Celtic end basking in the sunshine and singing the tune as loud as they could.
