Feyenoord have released a statement after UEFA dealt out a stiff punishment that now affects Celtic’s visit in the Europa League.
Celtic will face Feyenoord in matchday five of the Europa League on the 27th of November in Rotterdam.
The Hoops support still don’t know if it will be Martin O’Neill or Wilfried Nancy who will take charge of the big game. Although Nancy is rumoured to become the new Celtic manager.
What Celtic supporters do know now is that when they arrive at the De Kuip at the end of the month, the stadium will look far different from the last time they visited the Netherlands.
Feyenoord to ‘permanently close’ stand for Celtic’s Europa League clash
Feyenoord were in trouble by the UEFA beaks after a huge pyro display (pictured above) hauled the club to a disciplinary hearing in Nyon.
And now, Celtic fans will face the Dutch side with a full stand closed to the home support after the European governing body hammered Feyenoord.
In a statement on Feyenoord’s official website, the club said, “Feyenoord must permanently close the entire Gerard Meijer Tribune for the upcoming European home match against Celtic and pay a €60,000 fine. However, the club is allowed to welcome supporters to the Gerard Meijer Tribune for the final home match in the UEFA Europa League league phase against Sturm Graz.
“This is the outcome of Feyenoord’s appeal against the severe penalty imposed by UEFA for the massive fireworks display by supporters on the yellow side immediately prior to the home match against Panathinaikos.
“Originally, UEFA had forced Feyenoord to close the entire Gerard Meijer Stand, even against Sturm Graz. In the new ruling announced today, the UEFA Appeals Body has reduced the penalty for the home match against the Austrians from a definitive one to a conditional one, with a two-year probationary period.
“Supporters are urged to observe the stadium rules and therefore refrain from setting off fireworks. This is to prevent further and even harsher penalties.
“The club hopes to be able to share detailed supporter information about the two home matches against Celtic and Sturm Graz shortly.”
Celtic will want revenge on Feyenoord after the last game at De Kuip
The last time Celtic faced Feyenoord, both teams were in the Champions League in its old state.
The Dutch club beat Celtic 2-0 in a night that many of the travelling Hoops support will want to forget.
Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thaigo Holm both saw red as Calvin Stengs and Alireza Jahanbakhsh put Celtic to the sword.
With a full stand closure, Celtic will be hoping that having thousands of Feyenoord fans missing will work to their advantage to record just their fourth-ever win on Dutch soil.
