Five players that you forgot played for Celtic in the 21st century

Celtic have been blessed with some real talents over the years.

Names like Henrik Larsson and Artur Boruc are household names amongst the Hoops faithful and will never be forgotten.

Since 2000, hundreds of players have walked through Parkhead’s gates and have had varying degrees of success.

However, there are a few names that make you stop, scratch your head, and think: ‘Did they play for Celtic’?

So, to take you down memory lane, here are five Celtic players who you forgot played for us this century.

Pick two strikers that would go in your Celtic team of the 21st century

Jeremy Toljan

After failing to make the grade at Borussia Dortmund, Celtic were given the chance to sign right-back Jeremy Toljan on loan.

It was considered to be quite the coup at the time, with many thinking he would be too good for Scottish football.

While he wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t enough to earn himself a permanent contract with the club and the full-back can now be found playing in Spain with Levante.

Tyler Blackett

Signed on loan from Manchester United, Tyler Blackett has never had a bad thing to say about Celtic, but I’m not sure many will remember him.

The defender only played eight times for the Hoops but never broke into the side.

He was deployed as a left-back on his debut, but was mostly used in his favoured centre-back role.

Oliver Abildgaard

It’s hard to remember anything that Oliver Abildgaard did in his very brief time at Celtic.

Signed on loan from Rubin Kazan by Ange Postecoglou, big things were expected of the Danish midfielder after FIFA regulations allowed foreign players in Russia to suspend their contracts and let them join clubs overseas.

Abildgaard barely even had time on the pitch, which then led to his loan being terminated and eventually joining Hellas Verona.

Zheng Zhi

Zheng Zhi became the second Chinese footballer to play for Celtic after Du Wei also joined.

His Hoops career didn’t get off to the best start as he was made to sit out of the Europa League group stage after he wasn’t registered in time.

Zhi made his debut against Rangers in a 2-1 defeat, but did manage to win a penalty before his one and only goal came against Hearts in May 2010.

That would prove to be his final contribution as the midfielder was then released following the end of his contract.

Derk Boerrigter

Yes, I was as surprised as you to see that Derek Boerrigter spent a whole three years at Celtic.

Injuries plagued the German’s time in Glasgow, with his one and only goal coming in his first season against Ross County in November 2013.

23 of his 26 appearances came in that first season before he spent the rest of the time on the sidelines.
