Former Celtic favourite Joe Ledley is again without a club after Newport County announced he would not be retained next season.

Ledley signed a short-term deal in March and would only play four times for the League Two side. They confirmed the news in a statement on Friday.

He was on the bench as the promotion hopefuls missed out on a play-off win at Wembley against Morecambe last week.

Once a dynamic, energetic and charismatic midfielder at Celtic, Ledley has struggled for regular football in recent seasons.

The Welshman has made a combined 11 appearances for his last three clubs – Newport, Charlton and Newcastle Jets in Australia. [Transfermarkt]

Now 34, it’s unclear where his career will go from here.

He is currently exploring media opportunities. ITV recently announced that he’ll be part of their Euro 2020 coverage alongside former captain Scott Brown.

Joe Ledley had a strong connection to Celtic

Ledley played 157 times for the Bhoys, winning multiple titles. Along the way, he scored 30 goals, including a memorable derby winner against Rangers as well as a Scottish Cup Final effort vs Hibernian.

The midfielder had a strong attachment to the club. Former teammate Kris Commons has claimed Ledley was in tears when told he had to leave.

It’d be nice to see him as a regular pundit somewhere. His experience in Scotland, the English Premier League and Champions League, coupled with his personality, would make him a sound fit.

If he’s still insistent on pursuing his playing career, hopefully he ends up at a club where he can find regular week-to-week football.
