Mulgrew was one of Tony Mowbray’s standout players at Blackburn, but now he has a new club.
However, with Celtic’s backline needing rejigged there will have been some that would have wanted him back.
Charlie Mulgrew going to Wigan on loan
It’s a sideways move for the former Scotland award winner.
Perhaps game time this season wasn’t going to be forthcoming for Mulgrew at Ewood Park.
Mulgrew joined Blackburn Rovers from Celtic in 2016. He was out of favour and Rovers offered him a great escape down south.
Perhaps the former international just wants a change and Wigan would allow that.
His teammates include ex-Celts David Marshall and Danny Fox.
Whereas he will also be joined by former Rangers youth, Kal Naismith as well as Joe Garner and Josh Windass.
Manager Paul Cook looks to be building a formidable squad ahead of this season’s Championship. The club finished 18th last season and will be looking to do much better.
Mulgrew will bring much needed experience, but there will be others who would have loved to have seen a third and final stint at Parkhead.
A third move to Celtic is now unlikely
At his age, it now looks like Mulgrew will not be coming back to Celtic.
The fans were bewildered to sign the former Aberdeen man at first but he went on to win countless awards.
The versatile player was a free kick expert and bailed the Hoops out on many occasions. Arguably, the club are without someone of his versatility as well as his set-piece abilities.
Nevertheless, Mulgrew is forever in the minds of fans for his award winning season.
It’s just a shame that the big Hoops fan won’t be coming back in the quest for 10-in-a-row.
