Former Hibs boss Bobby Williamson has backed Scott Brown to succeed under Stephen Glass at Aberdeen.
Rumours have persisted regarding Broony taking up a player/coach role at Aberdeen. Stephen Glass, who manages Atlanta United’s reserve side, has been hotly-tipped to replace Derek McInnes in the North-East.
Previously, Brown had said he wasn’t considering a coaching role. That, however, was prior to a transitional season for the Bhoys, which disappointed on multiple fronts. With his contract winding down, the Celtic captain might be assessing his options.
In an interview with the Scottish Sun, Williamson said:
“I think Stephen and Broony teaming up at Aberdeen, if that’s what was to happen, is a great idea.
“I don’t think Broony is finished at Celtic, not by a long shot. But sometimes players have to leave a club in order to get back.
“I wouldn’t rule out a scenario where Scott leaves Celtic, goes away and starts his career as a coach somewhere else, then ends up going back to Celtic.”

Bobby Williamson gave Celtic captain Scott Brown his breakthrough, reckons he would succeed at Aberdeen
It was Bobby Williamson who gave Scott Brown his debut at Hibs. Williamson also signed Stephen Glass in 2003 [Hibs Historical Trust]. The link is obvious.
Williamson has unique insight into the mindsets of both parties. In his view, Brown can still play to Premiership standard, but has an exciting future in coaching. He added:
“To be honest, I’d be surprised if Scott wanted to stop playing completely.
“Becoming a player-coach somewhere would make sense to me. He’s still got the energy to play in the Premiership comfortably.
“It’s not impossible that whoever comes into Celtic as the new manager this summer will want to keep him about the place in some kind of capacity.”
This is worlds away from the blinkered view of Ricky Foster. On the BBC Sportsound Podcast [15/2], the ex-Rangers and Aberdeen man said that Brown wouldn’t be ready for the challenge of playing and coaching for Aberdeen.
However, given Williamson’s experience with both Glass and Brown, we’re going to put a little more stock in the former Kenya boss’ opinion.
