Even after Celtic won the double last season, there is a feeling that all of that positive energy has been sapped right out of the supporters.

That’s down to how the powers that be at Celtic, led by Dermot Desmond, have been running the club, and not using the domestic success to push forward in Europe.

But the lack of ambition in the transfer market isn’t the only issue at CelticFrank McAvennie highlighted that the stadium needs a ‘revamp.’

Speaking on his Let Me Be Frank Podcast, alongside host Simon Houston, they outlined the issues at Celtic Park and how it’s behind the times.

McAvennie: “The stadium needs a revamp as well. It’s tired.”

Houston: “I think I mentioned this last week when I was with Jackie McNamara. People sitting in certain seats at Celtic Park have a restricted view because there are pillars holding the roofs up. This is 2026.”

Does Celtic Park need a revamp?

In terms of atmosphere, there aren’t many places in the footballing world better than Parkhead, especially under the lights in Europe.

But while Celtic have dominated domestically for a long time now, the club is falling behind the rest of Europe in modernising the stadium.

Despite their success in capturing the Premier League title last season, even Arsenal recognise the need for an upgrade as they look into refurbishing the Emirates Stadium they moved into back in 2006.

Yet the likes of Desmond, who is the principal shareholder at the champions of Scotland, sits on his hands, and just watches Celtic fall further and further behind the elite teams in Europe.

That’s why McAvennie, alongside host Simon Houston, were right to call out how Celtic Park has been treated for decades now, and how a major overhaul is required.

McAvennie: “I hope it’s not a case of let’s see if we qualify for the Champions League before we buy players.”

Houston: “If they do that again, and miss out, bank on getting Champions League football, there will be mutiny. There will be people charging the stadium and all sorts of stuff. They can’t do that again.”

McAvennie: “The stadium needs a revamp as well. It’s tired.”

Houston: “I think I mentioned this last week when I was with Jackie McNamara. People sitting in certain seats at Celtic Park have a restricted view because there are pillars holding the roofs up. This is 2026.

“In the mid 90s, it was never in a state that stadium, it was just a modern stadium. Just a new stadium. Never state of the art. Even less so now. It’s 30-odd years old. It just needs a total (revamp).

“Maybe that’s what they are planning to do. They were talking about for years bringing the Main Stand up to the same height – it won’t happen anytime soon. There is no point in redeveloping the Main Stand without doing something to the rest of the stadium, which is in dire need of it.”

McAvennie: “Terrible. We just won the double. Give the supporters something, whoever is in charge. Give the supporters something.”
