Gary Neville asks Celtic hero Kasper Schmeichel if he’s ready to retire

Kasper Schmeichel has been one of the best signings Celtic has made this season.

It would be difficult to find any Celtic fan who would disagree with that assertion, especially when many were nervous at the thought of Joe Hart retiring from the Bhoys.

Hart offered Celtic stability at a time when the club were in turmoil, so the thought of replacing him filled many fans with dread.

But Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers pulled off a transfer masterstroke with the signing of Schmeichel and fans have never looked back since.

Now 38, Schmeichel has just signed a one-year extension at Celtic, but that didn’t stop Gary Neville from asking the veteran goalkeeper if he’s thought about retirement.

Celtic hero Kasper Schmeichel questions whether he should retire

Neville posed the question if Schmeichel had thought about retirement, whether he can go on for another two or three years or even if the Celtic ‘keeper had thought about what he will do after football.

Schmeichel told Stick to Football [1h 14m], “I’ve never been the kind of guy to think of limitations. I think if I was thinking about limitations, I’d dive into the whole living in the shadow of someone and maybe not achieving things I’ve always wanted to achieve.

“So I’ve always lived in the thought that anything’s possible. But I’ve also been lucky in the sense that I’ve had a dad that’s gone through this.

“I don’t know how you guys feel. You’ve obviously all retired. I don’t know. Is there a better job out there than being in football?”

Kasper Schmeichel ‘not taking anything for granted’ at Celtic

Whilst Schmeichel recognises that that day will come, the Celtic hero is not thinking about bowing out of the game just yet.

Schmeichel continued, “If someone could give you back your best years, like, physically, would you go back to it? Exactly.

“While I’m physically able, I know there’s not something better for me waiting for me right now, so, but what I do now is I appreciate it more than ever.

“I’ve got another year after this. But again, I think when you get to that age, you just playing it by ear and not taking anything for granted because, you know as well as anyone, an injury could finish it all.”

Schmeichel is on the verge of entering the Celtic history books if he can guide the club to their record-breaking ninth domestic treble.

With a League Cup winners under his belt already, Schmeichel has only his third major domestic honour to his name.

The opportunity to add to that and gain more Champions League football at Celtic was clearly a factor in Schmeichel extending his stay for another 12 months, let’s hope by the end of next season, he’s still thinking in that same vein.
