Gordon Dalziel baffled by Scott Brown suggestion, as Celtic push for Wilfried Nancy as the new boss

The last time Celtic brought in a former player as their coach was when Neil Lennon returned following Brendan Rodgers’ exit from his first spell.

Now that Rodgers has left for a second time, it doesn’t seem as though the powers that be at Celtic are going to go down a similar road.

Yes, Shaun Maloney is in charge of Celtic right now, alongside Martin O’Neill, but it seems as though Wilfried Nancy is the frontrunner for the permanent Parkhead gig.

But Nancy isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and Scott Brown’s name has been brought up, as the Frenchman seemingly edges closer to the main job.

Gordon Dalziel baffled by the suggestion of Scott Brown as Celtic’s next manager

Brown is the current coach of Championship side Ayr United, and when the former midfielder’s name was brought up on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, it left Gordon Dalziel baffled.

Dalziel made the point that if Brown had never played for Celtic, nobody would ever consider him as the Hoops’ next manager.

“When you get big clubs, whether it’s Celtic or Rangers, you always think, ‘get a Celtic man in’,” responded Dalziel.

“That doesn’t get you a job. Look, put it this way, saying Scott Brown had never played for Celtic. Would Scott Brown be able to get in and be a manager or coach at Celtic?”

Celtic fan: “Who did Sir Alex Ferguson manage before he went to Manchester United?”

Dalziel: “That’s where he started (East Stirling and St Mirren), and then he went to Aberdeen. But Alex Ferguson won European trophies and leagues at Aberdeen.

“Scott Brown hasn’t won anything.”

Brown’s record at Ayr United

This is Brown’s second gig in management after he spent 12 months in the colours of English League One side, Fleetwood Town.

The former Celtic captain has lasted longer in Ayr and is closing in on two years at the club, as he pushes for promotion to the Premiership, alongside some former players who stand in his way.

Lennon is at Dunfermline, and Mark Wilson is at Partick Thistle, with Ayr currently occupying the final play-off spot.
