Gordon Strachan issues a typical reaction to news that Martin O’Neill will stay on at Celtic

There hasn’t been anyone in the modern era at Celtic who has been no-nonsense and straight to the point like Gordon Strachan and Martin O’Neill.

After O’Neill’s legendary spell after the turn of the century, Strachan replaced the Irishman and continued Celtic’s success on the pitch.

Nobody expected O’Neill to return years later, but that’s where Celtic are, and now it has been suggested he will be in charge for the Hoops’ 56th Premiership title push.

In typical Strachan fashion, when he was told that O’Neill is expected to stay for another 12 months, he stated it’s good news because ‘it keeps the natives from being so restless,’ as he told Off the Underside Podcast.

“I think it’s a good choice because I think it keeps the natives from being so restless,” said Strachan.

“We all know how that can be a big effect, especially at Celtic.”

Should Celtic push to sign Cláudio Braga now Martin O’Neill is staying?

Gordon Strachan backs Martin O’Neill staying on at Celtic for next season

There needs to be a rebuild from top to bottom at Celtic.

New faces need to enter the boardroom, as well as several big stars heading for the exit door and needing to be replaced.

This is where O’Neill comes into his own, and it will be interesting to see how he is going to be used by the powers that be.

Strachan was right to point out that Celtic have to use O’Neill’s ‘intelligence’ and ‘football knowledge’ to build a ‘better structure behind him.’

If the underfire Dermot Desmond and those sitting in the boardroom can do that, then, at the very least, it will release the intense pressure that has been on them for the past 12 months.

“I think it’s a good choice because I think it keeps the natives from being so restless,” said Strachan about O’Neill staying on for another 12 months.

“We all know how that can be a big effect, especially at Celtic. Martin has won the league again, so people trust him.

“In that time, Martin can oversee, and hopefully they will use, and they will use his intelligence and football knowledge to build up a better structure behind him.”
