‘Greatest honour’ – Kasper Schmeichel over the moon as Celtic hero achieves his ‘boyhood dream’

Kasper Schmeichel has enjoyed a long and illustrious career before he joined Celtic.

The 39-year-old goalkeeper has won the English Premier League and FA Cup with Leicester and is now helping Celtic dominate Scottish football.

Picked as the successor to Joe Hart, Schmeichel has already won the League Cup and is on his way to a potential treble in his first season under Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

Now on international duty, Schmeichel has been named captain of Denmark for the Nations League double-header against Portugal.

And the big Celtic stopper is over-the-moon.

Schmeichel told BT, “I’ve always said that being captain is a boyhood dream. It’s the greatest honour you can have as a footballer. To be able to lead your country onto the pitch… there’s nothing greater.

“It’s something I never take for granted. I enjoy the responsibility, and I’ve been lucky enough to try it many times before.”

“It feels very natural and my role doesn’t change in the team. I just try to be myself as much as possible. But it means an incredible amount to me.”

Celtic hero Kasper Schmeichel’s glittering Denmark career

Schmeichel will earn his 112th Denmark cap in the game against Portugal tonight.

The Celtic stopper’s Denmark career didn’t start off the best after his first cap was earned in 2013 in a 3-0 defeat to Macedonia.

However, since then, Schmeichel has kept 50 clean sheets in 111 appearances and has starred in Euro 2020 where England knocked out Denmark on penalties at the semi-final stages. He also made the last 16 of the 2024 tournament.

Schmeichel has also appeared in two World Cups. In 2018 Denmark made the Lats 16 but was knocked out, again, on penalties by defeated finalists Croatia.

In 2022, Schmeichel faced up to Tunisia, France and Australia as Denmark suffered a shock group-stage exit after losing to the French and The Socceroos and drawing with the Tunisians.

Celtic fans can watch Schmeichel in action tonight as he bids to get one over on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.
