Greece international boss Gus Poyet has indicated that Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis will miss the Hoops return to domestic action against Motherwell on Saturday.

However, in more positive news, the former Brighton and Sunderland manager also stated that he doesn’t believe the forward’s knock will keep him out for very long.

After continuing his impressive form across 2022 into the new season, it didn’t come as much of a surprise to see Giakoumakis called into the Greek squad.

But, before the frontman could even feature for his nation in games against Cyprus and Northern Ireland, he picked up an injury knock in training.

Reports from his homeland indicated that the Hoops striker was sent for a scan after feeling discomfort in his leg. Despite nothing serious being flagged, Giakoumakis was still put under supervision and missed his nation’s 1-0 loss to Cyprus at the weekend.

Many Celtic supporters have been eagerly anticipating further updates from the Greece boss regarding the ex-Eredivise top scorer’s current injury status.

Before his country’s final UEFA Nations League match-up versus Northern Ireland, Giakoumakis’ chances of making the game were rated at ’50/50′ by Poyet [SportFM].

However, the Celtic striker was once again missing from the Greece squad, as they went on to secure promotion in the Nations League with a 3-1 win.

Speaking in the aftermath of that victory, Poyet was asked for an update surrounding the current injury status of Giakoumakis ahead of the Bhoys Scottish Premiership return on Saturday.

The 54-year-old delivered a somewhat positive update on the striker’s current fitness status, insisting that he doesn’t believe this injury knock will keep him out for long.

But, Poyet also indicated that he expects Giakoumakis to miss Celtic’s return to Scottish Premiership action at Parkhead against Motherwell.

When asked about Giakoumakis’ absence, he said [Greece NT]: “He had a small problem, and we couldn’t risk him.

“I don’t know how long. I think it’s not going to be long out, but if you ask me now, I don’t think he will play at the weekend in Scotland. So, he was not fit to play.”

Ange Postecoglou will be thankful of latest GG update after unfortunate international break on the injury front

Ange Postecoglou will know as good as anyone, having been the former boss of the Australian national team, that heading off on international duty is a huge opportunity and honour for the players amongst his squad.

However, the 57-year-old hasn’t had much luck on the injury front, with several first-team stars picking up knocks over the last seven days.

Although it is extremely disappointing that Giakoumakis will be missing out on the Motherwell game this weekend, thankfully, it doesn’t sound as though the forward should be out for too long.

Postecoglou still has a quality striker at his disposal, with Kyogo Furuhashi now almost guaranteed to lead the line at Paradise this weekend.

Hopefully, it won’t be long before Giakoumakis is back in training, particularly ahead of the busy fixture schedule we face in the coming weeks and months.

But, as suggested by Gus Poyet, we are unlikely to be without our number seven for Saturday’s game.
