The Vasilis Barkas story is one that is hopefully coming to an end at Celtic. Currently on loan at FC Utrecht, the Greek international has had a very good season with the Dutch club. So much so that they are keen to make the move permanent.
But if reports from Greece are to be believed, Celtic could very well outprice any move for the enigmatic goalkeeper.
According to Sportdog, Celtic have placed a €5m (£4.4m) price tag on Barkas. The outlet also claims that AEK Athens holds a 10% sell-on clause on the Celtic keeper.
Yesterday, 67 Hail Hail reported that FC Utrecht owner Frans van Seumeren was doing all he can to secure Barkas on a long-term permanent deal. He also let slip that there are other clubs interested in the 28-year-old so maybe Celtic’s plan to recoup the £4.5m they paid for him may not be fruitless after all.
Celtic should move Barkas on no matter the cost
I know that statement is a bit dramatic but this is a chapter we need to close. Barkas name is synonymous with the disastrous COVID season and that is one part of our history we are keen to move on from.
For too long now the Greek keeper has been the subject of speculation and for the sake of his career, and Celtic’s bank balance, he needs to move on.
There is no doubt Barkas is a very good keeper. You don’t earn 13 international caps by being bad at your job. It’s just not worked out for him in Glasgow.
At his age, Barkas still has his prime years ahead of him. If he leaves Celtic this summer he could still salvage his career. And if he does, he goes with our best wishes.
