Greg Taylor reveals he helped PAOK sign ex-Celtic teammate who now ‘isn’t interested’

Greg Taylor is now well into his first season since leaving Celtic.

Despite Brendan Rodgers’ public push to keep him, the defender ran down his contract at Celtic Park before agreeing a move to Greece.

The arrival of Kieran Tierney made the timing of Taylor’s exit make sense, but as one of Celtic’s most consistent first-team starters, he was still bound to be missed to some extent.

In over 200 appearances for the Hoops across six years, Taylor won 11 trophies, including two trebles. His best days undoubtedly came during Ange Postecoglou’s tenure.

He’s now at PAOK, and he isn’t the only ex-Celtic face now playing at the Toumba Stadium.

Ex-Hoops loanee Jonjoe Kenny also moved to the Greek club last summer, after a number of years playing for Schalke and Hertha Berlin in Germany.

Also now at PAOK is ex-Celtic favourite Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Also a Celtic star under Postecoglou, Giakoumakis is back on loan in his homeland from Mexican side Cruz Azul.

Speaking to Open Goal, Taylor discussed how he helped the club sign the big striker… and how he firstly helped him with the language, but now isn’t interested.

On the new language, he said: “It’s real Bobby Basic, inniit? Good morning, goodnights, hellos…

“We’re lucky because the majority speak English, unless you get a dodgy one at the petrol station.

“Jonjoe signed a week before me, and then big Giako, he signed about a month after.

“I spoke to him, and the sporting director was like: ‘What do you think of big Giako?’ I was like: ‘If you can get him, that’s a no-brainer.

“Certainly Jonjoe (has helped me settle in.) because he’s from Liverpool, I’m from Glasgow… well, I’m from Greenock, but I tell these that I’m from Glasgow.

“So that’s helped, having him, definitely. But big Giako, for the first week, was a good help for the first week… and then he’s with the Greeks now, so he’s no interested in me.”

Greg Taylor and Celtic’s summer departures: where are they now?

Taylor admitted that he hasn’t played as much as he would like at PAOK, but has still made 16 appearances for a club still competing domestically and in the Europa League.

For Nicolas Kuhn at Como, starts have been hard to come by in Serie A. He has made five in the league this season, scoring one goal.

His teammate Alex Valle, on the other hand, is loving life at Cesc Fabegas’ side, and has even been tipped by some for a return to Barcelona after his form.

Adam Idah has also largely been benched at Swansea, though this is mostly down to the form of fellow striker Zan Vipotnik, who is the Championship’s top scorer.
