Celtic are preparing for their first Champions League knockout game for the first time in 12 years this week.
The Bhoys will face German giants Bayern Munich in the knockout play-off round with a chance to reach the last 16 and play either Bayer Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid.
So much history is on the line for Brendan Rodgers as he could become the first Celtic manager to win a knockout round leg in the Champions League era.
Neil Lennon was the last Hoops boss to get them through to the last 16, while Gordon Strachan achieved the feat twice before in the 2000s.
Celtic don’t have a long and storied history with Bayern Munich having only met four times – the first in 2003 – ahead of their meeting on Wednesday evening.
Here is Celtic and Bayern Munich’s full head-to-head record as Rodgers stands on the brink of history.
Bayern Munich 2-1 Celtic

- 17 September 2003
- Olympiastadion, Munich
- Champions League Group A
Alan Thompson had Celtic fans in dreamland after firing the Bhoys in front against Bayern Munich in September 2003.
The Englishman scored midway through the second-half of the Champions League group stage game – the first ever competitive meeting between Celtic and Bayern.
But £18m Bayern signing Roy Makaay extinguished hopes of a stunning win as he converted a brace to provide the German giants with a 2-1 home victory.
Celtic 0-0 Bayern Munich

- 15 November 2003
- Celtic Park, Glasgow
- Champions League Group A
The return fixture was far less exhilarating, but much more rewarding from a Celtic perspective as Martin O’Neill’s men gained a point.
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn produced an excellent performance between the sticks to deny the Hoops yet another Champions League home win.
Celtic had won their five previous Parkhead group stage matches, but the goalless draw did keep their hopes of qualifying for the knockout phase alive.
Unfortunately, Celtic would lose to Lyon in the December and were eliminated.
Bayern Munich 3-0 Celtic

- 18 October 2017
- Allianz Arena, Munich
- Champions League Group B
It would be 14 years later before Celtic met Bayern Munich again in European competition, this time with Brendan Rodgers at the helm.
The Bhoys battled well with the Bundesliga kings in 2003, but they were no match for each other in 2017 with Bayern so much stronger as a squad.
Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich converted in the first-half to ensure a 2-0 lead at the interval before Mats Hummels made the game safe with a 51st minute header.
Celtic 1-2 Bayern Munich

- 31 October 2017
- Celtic Park, Glasgow
- Champions League Group B
Certainly a much closer tie than the Munich contest, Celtic only narrowly lost to Bayern Munich two weeks later.
Kingsley Coman put the Germans ahead after 22 minutes but Callum McGregor – who was excellent on the night – equalised late in the game.
But the Hoops could not hold on and it was only minutes later when Javi Martinez headed in to grant Bayern all three points in Glasgow.
