Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer has been raving about Celtic coach John Kennedy and the work he does at Lennoxtown.

Ajer spent years at the Bhoys but left for the English Premier League over the summer, where he is playing regularly with the Bees.

But he’s been reflecting on his Celtic days and the time spent developing under Kennedy.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun, the Norwegian international said: “John Kennedy is someone I am extremely close to. He is so good at developing young players, with the way he took care of me.

“There are difficult spells when you play football. You play bad games and, especially in a place like Glasgow, it can be quite tough. But he’s a guy that took care of me so well. He spent days off helping me develop at the training ground.

“He was always there when I needed him. He’s a guy I have huge respect for. He was a great coach as well. You could see the work he put in every day.

“Football can change so quickly but the quality he puts in every single day for the players shows he will be a top coach for so many years. He’s a very good man.”

Kennedy is a maligned figure amongst some Celtic supporters. There’s a sense, for them, that he’s stayed at the club too long. He also, of course, had a big hand in the failures of last season.

However, it’s clear the dressing room respect and value him. It’s also clear that his Celtic job is a labour of love, not just something he takes for granted.

Ange Postecoglou seems happy to have him around too and I don’t buy into the conspiracy theories he’s been foisted on manager after manager. If he wasn’t rated as a coach, he’d be out the door.

Food for thought for his critics?
