How much it will cost Celtic to keep the current squad together this summer

As Celtic look set to confirm their title win in the coming days, all eyes will soon shift towards what needs to happen in the summer.

Many will have identified the main areas that need reinforcements. Undoubtedly, there are several tweaks that the manager could do with making too if we want to seriously compete in the UEFA Champions League.

However, first and foremost, it’s imperative that we ensure we keep the squad together. Outside of getting rid of the deadwood, it’s clear just how important it is to hold on to our best players.

As things stand, we have 3 players currently on loan with us. Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers are scheduled to return to Benfica and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. Daizen Maeda, meanwhile, hasn’t yet been paid for and his move will become permanent in the summer.

But how much will it cost the club to hold on to all 3 players? Let’s start with Daizen.

The Scottish Daily Mail [print edition, 01/01, back page] reported back when he signed that Celtic will need to spend £1.6m at the end of the season. That’s something the club clearly intends to do given we have an obligation to buy this summer.

Maeda has proven to be an absolute menace for Scottish opposition this season, and will firmly deserve a permanent contract when it arrives in the summer. With UEFA Champions League football on the horizon, his energy is going to be essential.

CCV, Jota, and Maeda won’t come cheap

Whilst Maeda looks like a bargain, it starts to get a bit more pricy after that. Take Jota for example. The Scotsman’s Barry Anderson reported last week that it will take £6.3m for Celtic to bring the Portuguese talent back next season.

Jota certainly looks worth every penny when you take into consideration his goals and assist tally this term. Remember, he’s netted 12 and assisted 14 in all competitions [Transfermarkt]. 26 direct goal contributions for £6.3m? You’ll do well to sign better.

FInally, you have Carter-Vickers, who could be the most difficult to sign from Spurs this summer. The reason? A host of English Premier League clubs appear to be interested in his signature [Daily Record].

It’s already widely been reported that CCV would cost Celtic an initial £6m. However, the deal could rise to £10m in add-ons if it goes through [football.london].

If Celtic succeed in bringing all 3 to the club, that will mean we’ll keep our squad intact heading into next season. Assuming of course we don’t sell any of our top players. That would mean that the Hoops would have to fork out £13.9m this summer according to the reported fees mentioned. £17.9m after the CCV add-ons.

That would be some outlay for the Hoops before they’ve even managed to strengthen certain other areas. But can we honestly do without any of them? It would be an incredible risk we would be taking if we decided not to move, that’s for sure.
