Hugh Keevins calls for a ‘new dynamic’ at Celtic, and explains that Dermot Desmond should leave

There needs to be major changes at Celtic this summer, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen.

Even if Martin O’Neill, somehow, guides Celtic to the title, or even the double, it would be better than anything Brendan Rodgers did in his second spell because everything is a mess this season.

That’s why Hugh Keevins is calling for Dermot Desmond to leave by telling him ‘the time has now come’ for the champions of Scotland to enter a ‘new dynamic.’

Desmond is the man who runs things at the top of the house at Celtic Park, as everyone saw when he verbally battered Brendan Rodgers when he left in October.

Keevins has watched and followed Scottish football for decades, so he has seen it all in Glasgow, including Celtic’s dominance since the turn of the century.

Speaking on Clyde 1, the Scottish journalist acknowledged that Desmond has been ‘very successful’, but they now need new voices to lead them forward.

That is absolutely correct, and it’s something many of the supporters can get on board with, especially with Celtic getting beaten by Hibernian on Sunday and losing ground in the Premiership title race.

But where Keevins is incorrect is the suggestion that the Hoops are being ‘overtaken by Rangers’, when they have won only one title in about 15 years and are not even top right now.

That’s the reactionary nonsense that needs to be shot down. Celtic might be in a pretty bad place, but it doesn’t mean that years, years and years of winning trophies, more Trebles than Rangers have titles, should be disrespected or thrown away like that.

“This has been the season of three Celtic managers, two Celtic chairmen and one bad transfer window after another,” said Keevins

“The club is in a chaotic state. When Brendan Rodgers left, and Dermot Desmond issued the statement that he did, things started to decline rapidly thereafter.

“Martin O’Neill has held Celtic together. Twice. Replacing Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy.

“My interpretation of events is that Dermot Desmond has been good for Celtic, but the time has come now. He has been there a long time. The club has been very successful.

“But the club now needs a new dynamic. Celtic are out of date. They are being overtaken by Rangers. I stand by what I said; the balance of power in Glasgow is shifting. From the east end to the southside.

“Celtic need that fresh dynamic which comes with new ownership.”
