Hyeongyu Oh has returned home to South Korea after winning the treble with Celtic this season. In what has been a remarkable six months for the Hoops striker, Oh has already added three winner’s medals to his collection in his short time at the club.
And as he arrived at the local airport, Oh was confronted by the Korean media. Fielding questions, Oh reflected on the treble-winning season and said he has learned a lot from Kyogo Furuhashi and pinpoints who he would like to face in next season’s Champions League.
Speaking to the Korean media on his arrival back home, Oh said [YNA News], “We played Real Madrid before I came (to the team) this season, and I’d like to play them too.
“I’m happy to be back with Treble. Actually, this is not something I achieved together from the beginning. I’m happy that we won the championship, but next season, I’ll definitely try to contribute from the beginning.
“I went out this winter and felt that there were too many things I lacked.
“I will use it as a springboard and do better next season. I didn’t show my full capabilities.
“I learn a lot from every training session. Furuhashi has very good movement and excellent finishing, and I learned a lot from him.
“I played a lot as a substitute this season. If you say it’s not enough, it’s not enough, and if you say it’s a lot, it’s a lot.
“I want to play against as strong an opponent as possible. I want to play against a world-class club, and I want to test myself against their players.” [translated by Deep L]
Bought as a direct replacement for Giorgos Giakoumakis, the arrival of Oh was met with some trepidation by the Celtic fans. As a relatively unknown striker, he had the job of picking up where Giakoumakis left off after the Greek striker sealed his move to Atlanta United.
Scoring his first goal against St Mirren back in February, Oh has had to wait on the sidelines as Kyogo Furhashi’s form made the Japanese striker virtually undroppable. Even so, the Celtic fans took him to their hearts quick quickly and showed their appreciation of him with his own song from the stands.
But when he has been presented with his opportunity, he has taken it. Seven goals is not a bad return for a young striker whose minutes on the pitch are largely limited to substitute appearances. The Korean has also impressed his national manager, Jurgen Klinsmann whilst on international duty this season.
Oh can now relax as he takes in a holiday and hopefully after a full pre-season under his belt, he can kick on and continue his development at Celtic.
