The 2026 World Cup is around the corner, and several Celtic players will be hoping to feature for their respective countries.

As of this moment, ten nations are booked in for football’s biggest stage, which will be co-hosted by the United States of America, Canada and Mexico, and will have a first-ever 48 teams participating.

Along with the co-hosts, Japan, who have Celtic duo Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate in their ranks, New Zealand, Iran, current holders Argentina, Uzbekistan, South Korea and Jordan have also booked their golden ticket.

Celtic’s back-up winger Hyunjun Yang was on the bench as South Korea beat Iraq to confirm their place on the World Cup stage, but he didn’t get onto the pitch.

One man who did is very familiar to the Celtic Park faithful, and he is now plying his trade in Belgium for Genk.

Ex-Celtic star Hyeongyu Oh fires South Korea to the 2026 World Cup

Hyeongyu Oh was a back-up option at Celtic, and he produced mixed displays during his time in Glasgow, before finding a new home in Belgium.

Given Celtic’s utter dominance in Scotland, the 24-year-old still managed to bag five trophies, including two Premiership titles.

Oh signed for Genk last summer, and will now be on the World Cup stage next summer, along with Yang, after his goal helped beat Iraq in the World Cup Asian qualifiers.

How has Oh fared after his Celtic exit?

Oh was a strong centre-forward, who probably lacked the sharpness and bite of a Kyogo Furuhashi, but he wasn’t handed the regular minutes to prove his worth.

That seems to have followed him to his new club, and it surely must be frustrating, because he is handed chances, just not the trust to play the whole match.

That includes only playing 90+ minutes on two occasions in Glasgow, and he is yet to play an entire game for Genk.
