Journalist Stephen McGowan has dispelled the myth that Eddie Howe is waiting on an English Premier League job while the uncertainty surrounding Celtic continues.

One of the major worries some fans have about Howe’s potential appointment is that he could end up taking a job in the bottom half of the Premier League table before he signs on the dotted line at Celtic.

There’s a perception that Eddie Howe could be stringing our club along.

However, The Scottish Daily Mail’s McGowan has been speaking on Graham Spiers’ Press Box podcast [13/05] and not only reckons the deal is progressing but refutes that suggestion, based on the information given to him by someone close to Howe himself.

Spiers questioned whether or not he is holding out for a gig in England, to which McGowan responded: “No, I don’t believe that. That’s not my information at all. I know somebody who is in the Eddie Howe camp who is quite emphatic on that point. He’s done the lower reaches of English football for a number of years.

“If you remember when Gordon Strachan joined Celtic, he said he wanted to do something different. Celtic don’t choose these managers, they choose Celtic.

“With Eddie Howe, the information appears to be he doesn’t particularly fancy the Crystal Palace situation. Listen, if they offer him £4m a year, I’m sure he would quickly grow accustomed to the idea, but I think he quite fancies the possibility of having a crack at Europe, challenging for titles, challenging for trophies.

“When you say to people in the Eddie Howe camp he’s waiting for Palace, Brighton or Newcastle – they couldn’t be more emphatic that no, that’s not the case. That said, he clearly has a few stipulations he wants in place before he comes.”

McGowan would also admit on Press Box that both he, and other journalists, clearly misread the timeline of the Howe to Celtic deal, stating that any deal is obviously more complicated than initially thought last month. However, he also believes that Howe ultimately will end up at Celtic Park.

That’s despite the club not leaking anything over the last couple of months. McGowan noted surprise that there is a complete news blackout and absence of leaks from Celtic Park, so it appears all of this information is coming from down south.

Realistically there is now little harm to a Howe delay. If he is arriving he’ll already be doing plenty of work behind the scenes. It appears to be a matter of Celtic getting their ducks in a row and selling it to the support.

The wait continues!

In other news, Celtic are ready to spend £7m on Scottish duo.
