‘I shouldn’t really say this’ – The time Martin O’Neill rinsed Graeme Souness with a Celtic compliment

Celtic legend Martin O’Neill is famed for his put-downs and one-liners.

During his time as the Celtic manager, O’Neill took no nonsense from the Scottish media or rival managers.

Now a pundit, the Hoops legend has the exact same style and O’Neill regularly puts fellow pundits in their place, especially when it comes to Celtic.

But there was a point during last season where O’Neill was asked whether or not Graeme Souness would have got into his Celtic treble-winning side and his answer was superb for the Hoops support and bitter-sweet for the ex-Rangers man.

Martin O’Neill’s superb Celtic compliment puts down Graeme Souness

O’Neill was being asked some quick-fire questions when the former Celtic boss was posed with this one.

Would Graeme Souness get into his Celtic treble-winning side? His answer was excellent.

O’Neill told The Warm Up, “I shouldn’t really say this but Souness would get in just about everybody’s world XI.

“That’s the last time personally, I don’t really like him, but it doesn’t really matter but I’m talking about his ability as a player.”

Watching it below makes it sound even better.

Clearly, O’Neill was being sarcastic with his answer but, just like Celtic do to Rangers, the Northern Irishman kept Souness in his place.

What Martin O’Neill said about Celtic needing a ‘stronger’ Rangers

The Rangers takeover by the 49ers Enterprises is one that Celtic fans have been keeping a close eye on.

Whilst there is nothing for anyone to be concerned about yet, what O’Neill said about having Celtic needing strong Rangers is likely to raise the eyebrows of the Parkhead support.

O’Neill once said, “Chris (Sutton) has mentioned the domination, and it is domination. Serious.

“Celtic can only do this thing. It’s up to Rangers and other football clubs to be better themselves.

“My only viewpoint is that, despite the brilliant run in European football this year, I do think Celtic need Rangers to be stronger, to stay strong themselves.”

So what will Celtic fans think of that? Many will agree, others certainly won’t but one thing is for sure, the Parkhead club are still in the driving seat as Scotland’s most successful club and fans won’t want that to change any time soon.
