‘I wonder’ – Roger Hannah spotted something different about Brendan Rodgers after Celtic beat St Mirren

It’s been a mixed week for Brendan Rodgers.

On Friday, he spoke to the press ahead of Flag Day and Celtic’s Scottish Premiership opener against St Mirren – and journalists were given a treat.

Rodgers was visibly frustrated by Celtic’s lack of spending this summer, and explained he needs to convince the club’s board further to make the signings needed.

He then oversaw Celtic scrape past St Mirren with Luke McCowan’s deflected strike proving the difference for the Hoops at Parkhead.

And after the game, he provided a number of interviews that caught the attention of Clyde 1 Superscoreboard pundit and journalist Roger Hannah.

Hannah spots ‘noticeable’ Rodgers change of tone

Rodgers, after beating St Mirren, appeared to be in a more upbeat mood and praised his team’s performance despite leaving it late to secure three points.

And Hannah thinks that was nothing to do with the victory, but perhaps because his public message to the board on Friday has had a profound effect.

Hannah told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Monday: “It was quite noticeable the change in tone from Brendan Rodgers on Friday lunchtime to Brendan Rodgers after the game yesterday.

“I wonder if something has happened between Friday lunchtime and last night (Sunday), and I don’t just mean a 1-0 win over St Mirren. I wonder if Brendan Rodgers knows that things are moving.

“I think that Champions League draw today has been kind to both Celtic and Rangers. I would expect Celtic now to have guaranteed a place in that league phase.”

How Rodgers reacted to BBC question after St Mirren win

Celtic got past the Buddies and got off to a 100% winning start in the league. But the focus after the game remained on the club’s transfer activity.

BBC Sportsound reporter Jane Lewis asked Rodgers which position on the pitch is his priority to strengthen over the coming weeks.

And the Northern Irishman could only laugh, with Lewis saying: “You’re giving me a big grin there. You’re not going to tell me, are you?”

Rodgers replied: “No, no, no, no. I’m fed up talking about transfers. I think we’ve got to the end of the window.

“So we’re concentrating on what’s here. A lot of work going on behind the scenes to improve the squad. And yeah, we’ll just enjoy this here.”

Has his message finally got through to the board over the weekend? Time will tell.
