Aaron Hickey has admitted he was excited about transfer interest from Celtic before his move from Hearts to Bologna, but feels a switch to Glasgow wasn’t right for his career at that point, The Glasgow Times reports.

Hickey was once on the books at the Bhoys as a younger teenager, before heading to Hearts and making a breakthrough into their first team.

The young defender has now confirmed Celtic came in many times to sign him up, however, his heart was set on a move to Italy.

Speaking to The Glasgow Times, Hickey said: “Celtic came in a lot and I was excited and happy about it. I don’t know if it was the right option for me, though, because of the deal or something.

“I’m a Celtic supporter and it was massive for me, but I just didn’t think it was the right time to go there. I wouldn’t ever rule it out down the line, who knows.”

Hickey was initially a regular upon his arrival in Serie A this season, which isn’t bad going for a Scottish 18-year-old.

However, a shoulder injury has ruined his campaign and he’s revealed to The Glasgow Times it could require surgery and further months out to fix.

The young left-back clearly has potential and will be learning loads abroad, even away from on the pitch matters. The move to Bologna is unlikely to do his career any harm at all.

Celtic don’t often come calling again though and it could be a long road to make it back to Celtic Park for the young supporter.

Still, it’d be great to see him progress in Italy and as he says, who knows what the future holds? With that inherent connection to Celtic, nothing can be ruled out.

In other news, Celtic are on the brink of bringing in Dominic McKay early.
