Celtic are on course to win their 43rd Scottish Cup this season.
Celtic’s trophy dominance is such that the Parkhead club are now officially Scotland’s most successful club with 119 domestic honours to their name.
Brendan Rodgers is responsible for lifting 10 of those trophies with number 11 on the way when Celtic are crowned Scottish Premiership champions over the coming weeks.
However, as the Hoops plan to win their ninth domestic treble this season, the host of the BBC’s The Scottish Football Podcast shared a bizarre view on Celtic’s Scottish Cup tie with St Johnstone fans will find utterly bizarre.

‘Impartial’ BBC man’s ‘problem question’ about Celtic winning the Scottish Cup
Phil Goodlad was looking ahead to this weekend’s Scottish Cup fixtures when he asked if Scottish football should be rooting for Celtic to lose to St Johnstone at Hampden.
Goodlad told The Scottish Football Podcast [8m 35s], “Do we need Celtic to lose this weekend for the benefit of Scottish football?
“And this is a problem question I have as a BBC journalist who is impartial, and I’m not a Celtic fan, I’m not a Rangers fan, so it doesn’t bother me one way.
“But to have such a dominant side and to have such a dominant manager who has never lost at Hampden coming up against a team that is fighting for their premiership futures and, you know, let’s be brutally honest, this is David against Goliath.
“Does our game this season need St Johnstone to beat Celtic?”
What a weird thing to come away with. Celtic fans will never remember these questions being asked when the Parkhead club were stumbling through the 90s as Rangers swept up trophy after trophy. That’s because the question was never asked.
Celtic making it to domestic cup finals raises the profile of Scottish football as the Parkhead faithful sell out Hampden every time the Hoops make it to a major final.
Unless looking at pictures of rows and rows of empty seats whenever Celtic don’t make a final is a good look for the game?

Celtic’s dominance over Rangers in the Scottish Cup
As previously said, Celtic are record-holders of the Scottish Cup, having won the competition 42 times so far in their history.
Agianst Rangers however, the Parkhead club have dominated their Glasgow rivals in the competition since 1980.
Celtic have faced Rangers 19 times since then, and here is how the Hoops have fared against the Ibrox club:
- 10 wins
- 29 goals scored
- Biggest Hampden: Celtic 4 v 0 Rangers – 2018 Scottish Cup semi-final
- Most recent Scottish Cup final win: Celtic 1 v 0 Rangers – 2024
Hopefully, come the end of May, Celtic will have their 43rd win in the bag, their 121st trophy and leave Goodlad asking the same question for the following season.
