Scotland international defender John Souttar has responded to speculation linking him with Celtic.

Celtic, Rangers and English clubs are said to be interested, with the Scottish Sun linking the Hoops with a move for Souttar back in November [Scottish Sun].

Souttar has been in the headlines for much of this season. Coming back to the game after a significant injury lay-off, the Hearts centre-back has shone in Robbie Neilson’s side. Enough, in fact, to be called up for Scotland, and to provide heroics against Denmark [Sky Sports].

The centre-back, though, isn’t paying much attention to swirling rumours about a move. For sure, Celtic fans are keen on the 25-year-old, even if it’s just because it’s upset Hearts fans.

For his own part, though, Souttar said [Courier]: “Before my injuries, I think [speculation] would have affected me more.

“Now, I don’t take anything for granted. I go into every game completely focused on the match and what I need to do. Everything else gets blanked out because I’m just thankful to be on the pitch.

“The older I get, and the experiences I’ve picked up, the easier it has got to deal with speculation.

“I’m loving my football just now. To be playing without any worries about injuries is brilliant — it’s the best I’ve felt in my career, physically — and that’s all the matters.”

International defender John Souttar not letting Celtic speculation affect him

Well, fair enough. Having been through what he has, it’s hard to blame John Souttar for wanting to focus on the job at hand. Hearts have had a very decent season, sitting third in the Premiership.

Celtic, though, will probably be keeping an eye on the Scotland international.

Souttar is out of contract in the summer. Cameron Carter-Vickers’ fee might be a bit much for the Hoops, combined with other signings that need to be made.

So, a quality centre-back with international experience for nothing sounds like a decent deal.

There will come a point when John Souttar has to address the speculation and make a decision on his career. But it sounds, for now at least, that it’s not concerning him too much.
