‘I’ve got to be honest’ – Kris Boyd eats his words on Celtic’s big January transfer deal

Celtic can barely be faulted for any of their transfer business deals this season.

Brendan Rodgers has made significant improvements in recruitment this season than in his first at Celtic, and that includes both incoming and outgoings.

Celtic let a number of players leave in both transfer windows this season as fans saw the likes of Bosun Lawal, Mikey Johnston and Matt O’Riley all leave the Bhoys.

However, there was a big move made in January that former Rangers striker Kris Boyd admits he got completely wrong due to the form of Celtic attacker Daizen Maeda.

Kris Boyd said St Mirren were ‘terrified’ of Celtic’s Daizen Maeda

Maeda notched his 26th goal of the season in Celtic’s win at St Mirren and Boyd said that the Paisley club’s players were ‘terrified’ of the Hoops striker.

Boyd told Go Ballistic [22m], “I’ve got to be honest, I like him through the middle. I do. Defences will drop off because they’re terrified of his pace.

“You can see in the wide areas as well at the weekend [St Mirren] really struggled to deal with him. He’s direct, but he was composed.

“As soon as he got on the other side of that defense at the weekend he was composed and rolled it past Zack Hemmings in the goal.

“Really top finish and 26 goals is some return.”

Boyd admits he was wrong about Celtic selling Kyogo Furuhashi

However, it seems that the form of Maeda has made Boyd rethink his verdict on Celtic selling Kyogo as he now admits he got it all wrong about the £10m deal to sell him to Rennes.

“I was one of the ones that thought they would they would miss Kyogo.” continued Boyd, “Listen, Kyogo might have scored more goals and Celtic might have won games more comfortably or whatever, we don’t know, but Maeda has definitely taken up that role and mantle and moved through the middle and created chances.

“And it’ll be interesting to see now what Celtic will do in the summer.”

Whilst Kyogo struggles at Rennes, Maeda is in the form of his life right now at Celtic.

The Japanese winger has been in devastating form in Paradise as he terrorises defences not only domestically but also on the continent with Celtic.

Maeda will undoubtedly have a huge part to play in Celtic’s quest for another treble and as for Kyogo, Celtic fans will be hoping that he can turn his Rennes career around and show the French club the player that made the Parkhead fans fall in love with him over his three years in Paradise.
