James McFadden ‘not a fan’ of what Callum McGregor did during Celtic’s Scottish Cup trophy lift

Nobody in Scotland is more used to lifting trophies than Callum McGregor.

Therefore, you can understand why the Celtic skipper wanted to do something a little different on Saturday afternoon at Hampden.

Following Celtic’s Scottish Cup final win over Dunfermline Athletic, you would have the usual trophy lift in the stands at Hampden.

But McGregor and Celtic opted to lift the Scottish Cup on the Hampden Park pitch, which didn’t go down well with James McFadden, because he prefers the ‘traditional’ way.

“I am not a fan,” said McFadden. “I understand there is a platform on the pitch. But I like the traditional trophy lift.”

Give us your gut feeling after the cup final… will Martin O’Neill be Celtic manager next season?

Callum McGregor lifts the Scottish Cup on the Hampden Park pitch

Usually, the captain would go up first, collect his winner’s medal, and then wait for the rest of his teammates before lifting the trophy in the stands.

This time around, the rest of the Celtic squad collected their medals first, before McGregor went up last, and then walked down the steps and went onto the pitch to lift his seventh Scottish Cup crown.

It seemed to be pre-planned by the man with the armband; perhaps he wanted to do something different?

At the end of the day, McGregor is used to lifting so much silverware that he can do whatever he wants now.

Nonetheless, this was the conversation McFadden had on BBC One, as Celtic and McGregor were about to lift the Scottish Cup.

BBC commentator: “A fourth Scottish Cup for Martin O’Neill. A seventh for Callum McGregor. It has been a wonderful career.

“They are going to lift the trophy on the pitch, which doesn’t seem right, does it?”

McFadden: “I am not a fan. I am not a fan. I like the captain going up first, lifting the trophy, passing it along, and having the moment there.

“I understand there is a platform on the pitch. But I like the traditional trophy lift.”
