James McFadden pinpoints moment Bayern Munich ‘lost all control’ as Celtic looked better side in Champions League tie

James McFadden has pinpointed the exact moment Celtic took control of their clash with Bayern Munich last night.

The Hoops trailed 2-0 thanks to strikes from Michael Olise and Harry Kane with the home side’s defence costing both goals with a pair of errors.

That allowed Bayern to feel comfortable during the game before Brendan Rodgers opted to make a handful of changes to his team.

Yang came on and made a difference but it was Daizen Maeda‘s move to play through the middle with Adam Idah coming off for Jota that changed the game as a contest.

The Japanese even pulled a goal back and his press late on spooked the German visitors.

Faddy reckons that was the moment Bayern lost their control of the game because of Maeda’s work rate and his energy even late in the fixture.

That, for the former Scotland international, put Celts on the front foot for the rest of the action.

Daizen Maeda playing as striker changed the game for Celtic

“I think towards the end of the game, Celtic looked the better side,” McFadden said on BBC Sportsound punditry duties.

“They looked the more threatening. Look, Bayern have the lead, they don’t need to go chase it but they lost all control they had.

“They had so much control in the first-half but lost all that in the second. I think the switch for Maeda into the striker role, because he chases lost causes, but also because he triggers the press.

“He goes to press the centre-back and goalkeeper, but you can see him ushering his team up behind him. You can see Yang going with him, Jota, the team squeeze up.

“Bayern, if you count the short passes in the first-half and how many long passes they were forced into in the second-half.

“Celtic coming back with that belief, energy, attacking intent, that was a little warning to Bayern that it’s not over.”

Faddy is adamant Celtic are not yet out of this tie.

Rodgers takes his troops to the Allianz Arena next week in a bid to cause the upset of all upsets and come back from 2-1 down to turn the tide.

It won’t be easy for the Scottish giants but Faddy believes they now at least have the confidence to know they can create Bayern problems when they try.

And if Maeda can push on again, you never know.

Celtic are still in the Champions League tie vs Bayern Munich

“Although most people looking will think it’s highly unlikely, but it’s a warning that they’ve still got work to do when Celtic come into town.

“I thought Yang did well when he came on, used the ball well and was taking players on at the right time. He was getting his head up, playing passes, and Celtic looked really strong towards the end.

“They can take a lot from it, you never want to celebrate defeat and by no means am I saying they should, but they can take a lot of confidence from the way they finished that game.

“You think of the one Maeda went round Neuer as well, that could’ve been a goal, Johnston’s shot, there’s a lot of credit Celtic can take out of this.”
