Jason Cundy sends ’embarrassing’ Champions League message about Celtic and Manchester City

What an eventful Champions League group phase for Celtic.

It ended with Celtic losing 4-2 at Aston Villa on Wednesday night, but the players can hold their heads up high because they fought admirably in a hostile arena and against an opponent that secured a top-eight finish.

It now means that Brendan Rodgers’ side, who secured their play-off spot after beating Young Boys last week, will play either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the two-legged play-off round next month, as Manchester City possibly await in the round of 16.

It’s never easy for Celtic, is it? But, at the end of the day, you compete in Europe’s elite-level competition for these moments!

And, one thing that can’t be denied is that the Bhoys are showing progression, improving in Europe, even in defeat against Aston Villa, it was hard-fought, and only for the opponent’s added quality in the second half seeing them through.

By the end of it all, Celtic secured a 21st-place finish in a 36-man league and Jason Cundy had a simple message for Manchester City.

Jason Cundy says it’s ’embarrassing’ Manchester City finished below Celtic in the Champions League table

Cundy has previously been outspoken, in a negative way, about Celtic, but he gave them their flowers for ‘climbing the mountain’ at Villa Park.

The former Chelsea man appreciated the performance and how Aston Villa’s ‘quality’ just shone through in the end.

But, Manchester City, who had to come from behind to beat Club Brugge in their final match, finishing in 22nd and going through to the play-off stages on goal difference.

Cundy labelled it ’embarrassing’ because teams like Celtic pipped them, as he told talkSPORT.

Given that they are the champions of England and the hundreds and hundreds of millions they spent, then it just shows how well Celtic have done to prove that they can compete with the elite.

“I don’t know what’s going on with Manchester City, they should keep their heads down,” said Cundy. “They are through, on goal difference, it’s embarrassing for them. They are through. It’s all that matters, but my god, keep your heads down Manchester City fans.

“This is a terrible campaign. They got in through the back door. They got in on goal difference. The same points as Club Brugge. By the way, the same points as Dinamo Zagreb, right, they are out. Keep your heads down. Tonight isn’t for you.

“This is how embarrassing it is for Man City. Celtic finished above them in the league. Well done Celtic, by the way, I know we had a little bit of fun there, but they actually did alright. I know (they were 2-0 down). It’s a tough enough task. But to give yourself a mountain. They climbed that mountain. Went over to the other side and then it’s just the quality.”
