Jim White did not hold anything back when discussing Martin O’Neill and Celtic’s title chances, and his words carried a level of respect that immediately stood out.

White is clearly very fond of O’Neill as the two have developed a close personal friendship over the years.

However, the talkSPORT presenter could not hide his admiration for the Celtic boss’ presence and standing, making it obvious this was not just casual praise.

And it was White’s closing statement about Celtic and the title race that ultimately defined his deep respect for O’Neill.

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill earns respect that cannot be ignored

White worked closely with O’Neill at talkSPORT and when asked if Celtic should build a statue for his friend if they win the league, his answer was unequivocal.

White said: “Oh gosh, at the very least. I’ve really enjoyed being in Martin’s company and in the studio down here.

“When he’s here, he’s absolute gold. He’s wonderful company. He’s brilliant. And all one can have for Martin O’Neill is the utmost respect for what he’s done.

“I’ve had the good fortune to walk out of the news building down at the Shard when we finish when Martin’s been on with us, and as we walk into the general public here in London, they know who Martin O’Neill is.

“And anyone who encounters Martin is thrilled to see him, but he’s great. He’s great and when you push him that bit on air, he’s a mixture of great humour and authority. I absolutely have the utmost respect for the fella. I really mean that. He’s terrific.

“It would be amazing if Celtic do it with Martin at the helm.”

That level of praise is not handed out lightly, and it reflects how O’Neill’s reputation extends far beyond Celtic.

It also aligns with O’Neill’s standing at Celtic, where he won a domestic Treble and reached the UEFA Cup final in 2003.

His authority is rooted in results, and that record continues to define how he is viewed across football.

Celtic title comment from Jim White underlines Martin O’Neill impact

White’s final remark shifted the conversation from admiration to something more telling when he admitted that Celtic winning the title under O’Neill would be ‘amazing’.

That statement was delivered plainly, and it carries weight given White’s Rangers supporting background.

O’Neill’s return as Celtic manager in January 2026 was about restoring control, and his record of having won seven of his eight games in charge shows immediate impact.

The praise was emphatic, but White’s closing line confirmed his respect for O’Neill, and that is what makes it significant.
