John Hartson hits out at what he is hearing about Aiden McGeady amid Nicolas Kuhn criticism at Celtic

Nicolas Kuhn is having a difficult time at Celtic right now.

It’s not the norm for Kuhn because, when he first joined Celtic during the January transfer window of 2024, he struggled in his opening months, before exploding at the start of this current campaign.

Kuhn set the bar so high that many were talking about him, in December, of being a Player of the Season contender, but it’s fair to say that ship has now sailed.

Over the years, Celtic have had many players, especially those maverick-type performers, who can sometimes flatter to deceive or be inconsistent in their game.

Amid Kuhn’s poor form, the name of Aiden McGeady was brought up in an interesting conversation that was quickly shot down by John Hartson.

Aiden McGeady dubbed a ‘one-trick pony’ for Celtic

After starting his career in the colours of Celtic, McGeady did very well in his career, which also saw his talents land on the Premier League doorstep for clubs like Everton and Sunderland.

But amid this talk around Kuhn, one Hoops fan compared the German to McGeady, and then proceeded to call the former trickster a ‘one-trick pony’.

Listening on, Hartson was quick to shut down the fan and defend McGeady’s talents, as well as former Rangers player, Richard Foster, as they told Go Radio.

“Do you know what I think about Nicolas Kuhn,” said the Celtic fan. “The opposition teams are getting on him. Just like they did with Aiden McGeady, who ended up a one-trick pony.”

Hartson responded: “I have to come in there. Celtic got £10 million for Aiden McGeady 15 years ago. Aiden was a top player. He really was.

“Sorry to interrupt there, but to come out and say that ‘he is a one-trick pony’. He certainly wasn’t. I am not sure many Celtic fans will agree with that. I had to stop you there.”

Richard Foster, who played against McGeady, added: “I thought he was one of the most difficult wingers I had to play against. He could go down the line. He could cut inside. He had a little spell, when he first broke in, where he was quite slight.

“He then came back from an injury, and he was a machine. He could actually run away from you. Go past you with skills. I thought he was very, very difficult to play against. Now, that might say something about my defending. But I thought he was one of the best wingers I played against in my career.”

McGeady’s stats and trophies for Celtic

McGeady was an entertainer and someone who you would pay to watch, time and time again.

Sometimes, his numbers, in terms of goals and assists, didn’t do him justice, in regard to the horror he would cause opposition defenders on his day.

But overall, the former Republic of Ireland star can hold his head up high because he had an outstanding career.
