The edge has gone out of Celtic star’s game as pundit questions ‘anomaly’ of season

It must be difficult for players to maintain a certain level on a weekly basis.

Granted, Daizen Maeda has been exceptional this season and hit the 30 goals mark but even he had an off day last weekend when Celtic lost 1-0 to St Johnstone.

Others have had tough moments in green and white but none more so this term, perhaps, than Nicolas Kuhn.

The German, 25, was lethal early on both domestically and in the Champions League but has recently been accused of “over-trying” at times which may mean he is in his own head.

Pundit Michael Stewart isn’t exactly sure where Kuhn’s regular level is for Celtic as he has produced moments of magic and then gone quiet again.

Michael Stewart questions Nicolas Kuhn early Celtic season ‘anomaly’

And having lost his edge recently, Stewart was left questioning if his incredible early form was an exception to his norm.

“Look, the edge has gone out his game and for wide or front guys like that, when the edge is taken away it makes all the difference,” Stewart said on Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club pod.

“I’ve said it before, the danger is that question marks then start to be raised with regards to were the first three or four months of the season an anomaly?

“Where is his general level? Struggled when he first joined last January, start of this campaign he was top man, incredible and in Europe as well, but it’s tailed off dramatically.

“He’s got a big end to the season.”

What Kuhn’s stats say about Celtic form dip

Kuhn’s season certainly has dipped and all Celtic fans, as well as Brendan Rodgers, can see that.

He had a poor game vs St Johnstone last weekend and was hauled off by the manager at half-time following what would have been a tense team talk from a raging gaffer.

But what do the stats actually say?

Nicolas Kuhn Celtic stats, 24/5
Played: 44
Goals: 18
Assists: 14

Kuhn’s first 27 matches in the campaign saw him lash in 16 goals and chip in with more than his fair share of assists.

But in the most recent 17 he’s only managed two.

The drop has been significant and with a Treble still to be won, Kuhn will have to pick it up again or risk being left out by Rodgers.
